BSNL unveiled three new postpaid plans on December 1 and the most interesting offering on the list is priced at Rs 798. This plan has been introduced by BSNL to take on the Rs 799 JioPostpaid Plan. BSNL is going after Reliance Jio in every segment- be it prepaid, broadband and postpaid, the state-run company is aggressively looking to undercut the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco. BSNL is currently standing at fourth place in the list of operators with the most number of subscribers, however, it isn’t backing off from competing with the top three telcos- Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea....

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in its response to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) consultation paper on “Auction of Spectrum in Frequency Bands Identified for IMT|5G”, said that the ecosystem for the 600 MHz spectrum band is not ready yet. The state-run telco noted that it would be the first time that frequencies in the 526-698 MHz would be put to auction for the telcos. BSNL said that there isn’t enough data available globally to comment on whether this band is required....

BSNL 4G Services in Karnataka The first big announcement from BSNL about a prominent 4G rollout for its subscribers was in the circle of Karnataka. The telco had announced in June 2018, that it would be rolling out the 4G network in as much as 130 cities of the state. During this, the telco had also said that it would be installing 30,000 towers in the country, out of which 10,000 would be set up in Karnataka alone....

BSNL will Organise Bidders and Stakeholders Meet As the first draft of 4G expansion tender received negative feedback from various bidders for the non-fulfilment of public procurement policy, ET Telecom reported that BSNL would rework on the tender as per the policy. Also, once the government lifts the lockdown period, BSNL will conduct a bidder meet and address the matter to the stakeholders. It is expected that BSNL will initiate the process of tender after conducting the stakeholders and bidder meet....

On Friday, the Department of Telecom (DoT) wrote to the Customs department regarding unauthorised sales of mobile signal boosters by e-commerce firms. It sought strict import rules to curb these practices. Google on Tuesday said that the company is extending the camera-based translation feature found on the Google Lens into the Google Assistant on the KaiOS devices in India. The company said that the KaiOS users in India can now use the Assistant to translate a real-world text into their own preferred language. Google said that the real-word text can include a product label, street sign or a document. The camera-based translation feature of the Lens was introduced at the Google I/O developer conference in 2019....

The search-engine giant also plans to then place ads with up to eight pictures in its search results as part of its “Gallery ads” feature. “By combining search intent with a more interactive visual format, gallery ads make it easier for you to communicate what your brand has to offer. We’ve found that, on average, ad groups including one or more gallery ad have up to 25% more interactions-paid clicks or swipes-at the absolute top of the mobile Search results page,” Raghavan said....
